May 3, 1863

Back in October of 2005, when I was a blogging newborn, I wrote a book review on A Treasury of Georgia Tales. In that review, I included the bare bones of a story that took place in Rome, GA, during the Civil War. (BTW, Rome has become my new hometown since I wrote that piece.)

Today is the 144th anniversary of John Wisdom’s ride into Rome to warn the citizens of an impending Union attack. Go there and read this piece or, better yet, find a more detailed account and read it. Wisdom is given credit for saving Rome from the attack, and the event is commemorated each year on this date.

One account of the story.
