Stillborn

The 11th assignment, due November 11, in the Deadlines for Writers group was to write an acrostic poem. On November 5 I woke up remembering the significance of the day in our family members' lives, and wrote this poem.

STILLBORN

Sometimes, silently, in the dark of night,

The loss, the grief, the might-have-beens, arise again -

Invading the peace made with long-ago loss,

Lifting life’s comfort-cloak of years.  And I remember tiny fingers,

Lovely little lips locked in a puzzled O, the heft of that little body in my arms.

Beautiful, budding rose, never to fully bloom!

Oh yes! That rosebud, ephemeral on earth, eternal in our hearts, is

Remembered. Her life, in the warmth of the womb, enriched ours.

November 5, 1991 – Caitlin Parker Turrentine
