Breakfast for a Prince

The Keep Writing Challenge for 05/05/2020 was to write a 200-word (exactly) story on the topic "tart."

Breakfast for a Prince

“Good morning, Axel. Breakfast is almost ready.”  Martha greeted the six-year-old as he came into the kitchen.

“Oh, and good morning, Grant and Adele. I hope you all slept well.”

Martha was struggling to keep a cheery countenance. The tourist season had ended abruptly yesterday when the governor issued a shutdown order for all the non-essential businesses in the state. The rest of her guests had already left, and the Curands would be leaving after breakfast. Martha had spent the day yesterday accepting cancellations. How was she going to pay next month’s bills when no guests were scheduled to visit for the next few weeks?

Grant sniffed appreciatively, “Sure smells good in here! Oh Martha, you made those wonderful blueberry muffins again this morning! “

He and Adele surveyed the heavily-laden table as Martha filled their cups with fresh aromatic coffee. A royal breakfast lay before them - not only the amazing muffins, but also eggs, bacon, croissants with creamery butter, yogurt, a fruit and melon tray, and even various cheeses and cereals!

Adele turned to her son, “What would you like for breakfast, Axel?”

Grant and Adele flushed with embarrassment when Axel excitedly asked, “Do you have cherry poptarts?”
