Cry for the Ashes

The Keep Writing Challenge assignment for 05-08-2020 is to write a 150-page (exactly) story with the prompt "ash."

Cry for the Ashes

Audrey squirmed, trying to get comfortable in the back of the SUV with her two younger sisters. The jacket tucked under her head for a pillow had flattened, and now Serena’s arm was anchoring it. To adjust her pillow would wake her sister.

Sighing, she stretched out flat on her back - Serena on one side and Angela on the other - and tried not to think about the comfortable bed she had slept in at home before the fire. She’d complained about sharing the room with Angela, but at least she had her own bed – with a soft mattress and fluffy pillow. And all her things. Her life.

“Mom,” she whispered. Was Mom still awake where she lay scrunched up in the backseat?

When she got no answer, Audrey’s suppressed pain burst free, and tears streamed into her ears.  Audrey cried into the dark. Audrey cried and remembered the ashes.
