The Keep Writing Challenge for 05-15-2020 is to write a 150-word (exactly) story using the prompt "contrary."
Baseball Is Life
I usually “go along to get along.” Nevertheless,
here I was - the lone contrary voice in the baseball parents’ meeting.
“I get that, Harry,” I said. “The team needs some
wins. They’re discouraged; they’re walking off the field with heads hanging. We
all feel for them and want to make it better for our sons, but I wonder… Is moving
them down to a lower level really a good idea?”
“Shouldn’t we teach our children to succeed by
setting goals and working toward them – dreaming, focusing, persevering,
working? None of us wants them to think it’s okay to abandon goals when the
going gets hard.”
Marty nodded. “Yeah, I want my boy to know he
can improve and succeed by working harder, that failure is not final. It’s a
hard call, but nobody ever said that being a dad is easy, right? We gotta help
these boys grow up.”
