Reading Vocabulary

I just finished reading a high-vocabulary novel (see previous post for a review). The vocabulary was interesting for the logophile.

Here are some examples of seldom-encountered words that I noticed:

nugatory ("...the nugatory movement of the windscreen wipers...")
excoriated ("...flesh was excoriated from hitting the rocks as he fell..."
supervened ("...the tragedy that had supervened in his life..."
putatively ("...putatively the partner..."
casuistry ("...was typical police casuistry..."
friable (".. was too friable to support his weight..."
fecundity ("...the silence lacked fecundity...")
inapposition ("...the level of inapposition..."
excrescent ("...like the excrescent evidence of...")
inchoate ("...the inchoate curve of ...")
vitric ("...in matters vitric...")
prefatory ("...prefatory remarks...")
sophistry ("...believing was sophistry at this point...")

How many of these could you define?
