The Power of Today
Age looks at life in light of days gone by
When shoulders bore such weight and paths were dim,
It ponders roadways blocked and detours made.
And sees that life is simply moments lived.
Age seeks to pass along life lessons learned
To youth still struggling hard to win life’s crown.
Age yearns to tell those youth, “Just live Today!
Yesterday is heavy. Put it down!
“Don’t carry past mistakes into today;
Old rocks will surely make you sink and drown.
Use old mistakes today for stepping stones.
Yesterday’s too heavy. Put it down.”
Today’s the prize, Dear One, go out and win it!
Your job is just to truly LIVE this minute.

Joan, that is powerful and so true. I would love for you to put your poems into a collection and publish it. I would buy it. ππππ. Carol
Thank you, Carol. I saw the quote "Yesterday is heavy. Put it down" and realized that its impact is at least partially due to its poetic rhythm (near-perfect iambic pentameter.) Then the lines nearly wrote themselves.
I really like this one. So true. So powerfully expressed!
